The 10-year Bloggiversary

Cotton+Steel

Fat quarters from the Cotton+Steel collection

I don’t tend to make a big deal about anniversaries but I’ve been told it’s perhaps because I don’t take enough time to “celebrate wins”. But this surely must be a win. To have somehow made it to the ten-year mark with this little corner of the internet… where I’ve documented my learning experiences in knitting, dyeing, spinning, and weaving. I’m eternally grateful that this technology exists and that it made possible these precious connections with other crafters around the world. Thank you to all the people who have read this blog and followed along with my smattering of crafty exploits.

They say, on average, hobbies last about three years at a time. So I’m pleasantly surprised with myself that even after ten years of crafting and writing, I still feel as wide-eyed and keen as I did with my first post. Ten years ago today, I was naively awaiting the arrival of several online yarn purchases (typical)… Today, I find myself sitting at my computer, surrounded by a half-completed baby quilt that I’m in love with, an in-progress Lush cardigan (in the new Mulberry colourway), and a pack of fat quarters cut from the new Cotton & Steel collection… The fact that this little packet of fabric has made me super giddy all day and slightly distracted from my “real work” is evidence to me that I still love making things with beautiful materials above all else.

I think I’ll celebrate this “win” with a little knitting, True Blood, and ice cream.

Contest time!

Leave a comment here about how knit blogging has changed for you over the past 10 years. Has Instagram replaced blogs for you? Or do you still make time to read your favourite blogs? We’ll do a draw on October 15th, 2014 and one lucky random commenter will get a swanky and stuffed swag bag from us! Come share in the discussion!

Thanks for sharing Felicia! You know how I absolutely love to celebrate everything, so I am glad that you are taking the initiative to celebrate more victories :)

I still like to read my favourite blogs, but it can be hard to keep up because they are all on different blog engines. I cruise Instagram and pinterest more often. It’s been really amazing to watch Sweet Georgia grow into a newer, bigger studio and to have taken your spinning class! I am moving to Sweden now so I think I should stop by knit city and get one of your Vancouver-related colourways to remind me of home! It’s been such a fun journey and I am sure I will come visit :) And keep posting to instagram I check it every few days usually!

Knitting blogs are a great way for us to learn a new skill or hone a skill from fellow knitters. I think the blogs allow for more detail in the instructions, so are far more valuable to me than Instagram. However, Instagram in a wonderful way to get information about what appears on people’s blogs. I think both are great assets in their own right, to enhance our knitting skills.

  6. Savannagal says:

Wow, 10 years is a long time. Congrats! I follow many blogs, but do not use FB, Twitter or Instagram. I enjoy reading blogs and have learned of many terrific companies and people through them, not to mention other blogs. Sadly, some of them have turned into advertising blogs and I had to say good bye to them. I enjoy your blog and wish the best for future years of blogging.

While I’ve never actively blogged, I still love following blogs. There are a ton of great resources out there that wouldn’t exist without blogs-when I need a technique, I turn to TechKnitter, and when I need a laugh, I can always find one on the Yarn Harlot’s blog!

Congrats on 10 years! Instagram will never replace my favorite blogs — they are where I go to I get my daily inspiration, my leads on beautiful yarn and brilliant patterns (and their backstory), creative solutions to thorny problems, and maybe most important — my daily wooly creature fix!!

I enjoy seeing the creativity of others; blogs with their detail and beautiful colors attract me more today than in the past. I truly appreciated the blogger’s effort to communicate excitement to me about my similar interests. I am not naturally creative and a little conservative in my crafting endeavours so I thoroughly enjoy seeing the vibrant alternatives to everyday life that bloggers share on sites like yours! Congratulations on a successful decade of existences! May you enjoy many more! Sincerely, Janet Nelson

I still love reading blogs, and since learning to spin earlier this year, YouTube has become my first avenue for figuring out how to do new things. I’d love to get out to classes more often, but sometimes it’s just not possible, so online resources are the next best thing for me!

I do still read blogs, but I also use Pinterest and Instagram more regularly. I usually have a few hours a week that I set aside to just dive into my knitting blogs. I use Feedly, which is a delightful feed reader that I love :) I find Knitting blogs to still be a big source for inspiration and introduction to new yarns, techniques and styles.

Instagram has absolutely replaced blogs for me. Very rarely do I sit at my computer and read blog posts anymore, if at all. Scrolling through my IG feed, I get to stay up to date on my fave bloggin’ families and knitting/crafting wizards.

Looking forward to next Friday and the fabulous kick off to KC14!

10 years??!! Wow, where has the time gone? Congrats, Felicia!
I still read my favourite blogs but have not ventured into Twitter or Instagram – yet. I go onto Facebook a couple of times a week but dislike it. I find I am increasingly turning to Pinterest and You-tube for ideas & answers regarding knitting. And where would we all be without Ravelry?!! Knitting, spinning, weaving, dying – we’ve come a long way in the last 10 years through social media.
Looking forward to seeing you at Knit City!

Blogs are the source of so many patterns, yarns, techniques, sources, news for my knitting, sewing, and quilting loves, ( and now weaving, too) that I really appreciate them. I started buying your yarn and reading your blog way back at the beginning, and I am still excited about what you do, the colors you offer, and on and on….

I do not know what FB is, but I do not Instagram or Twitter. There is not enough time for everything, so I knit and sew instead. Soooooo glad you are here for your ten year blogiversary. A big thanks.

I live in a remote area and have relied heavily on the internet to learn how to do all the new fibery things I’m doing. I read blogs voraciously and have learned to knit, spin, and weave all in the last year. I also look at Pinterest and Facebook. I took your Craftsy class on spinning dyed fibers and really enjoyed it. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise with all of us!

I’ll admit, I just got into the knitting blogging realm a few months ago… but it seems to me I find more blogs that are actually vlogs or video podcasts than written blogs nowadays. I assume that’s a relatively recent development since I definitely didn’t know about YouTube 10 years ago!

I love reading knit blogs, I find them so inspiring and always want to run to work in my current WIP or cast-on a new one. I mostly read blogs – don’t have one myself. Knitting has been a lifelong meditation/activity for me. Seeing the universal themes is very comforting. Things haven’t really changed that much over the years. To some degree, blogging has enlarged the community knitting circle :-). I still prefer and do get together with our group.

Happy Blogoversary! I found my first blog, knitting or otherwise when I first decided to learn to knit. Thank goodness there were real people who I could virtually connect with over colors, yummy yarns, geeked out gadgets, new patterns and techniques, and the coolest new bags to hold it all in. Along the way I’ve met some cool people and learned a great deal of crafty stuff. There’s always something new and that’s what keeps crafting fresh.

I enjoy reading other people’s blog; to know that I’m not the only one with the same joys and woes with knitting. :) I also agree with you: Thank goodness we have the internet! What would we do without it? How would we search for yarn shops in an area we plan to visit or find great yarns and teachers? Thank you very much for blogging! I hope to continue reading your blog for years to come. :)

I must admit that once Google Reader was discontinued, my reading of blogs has been reduced by quite a bit. (Of course, it hasn’t helped that I got a new job which seems to have taken control of most of my life.) I use Feedly as my reader, but I just don’t seem to get around to reading them much. I probably make more use of twitter and email now–I’m still not on pinterest and I don’t have a facebook account, so that limits things too.

Congratulations on your ten year anniversary! I like reading blogs, but I check Pinterest more often. I use YouTube and blogs if I need to master new techniques.

Hi and loads of congratulations from the other side of the pond! Felicia -you are responsible for kick starting a whole new interest in hand dyed yarn, and have cost me deep in the purse as my stash has grown over the last few years. When I retired a couplr of years ago, and cut back on spending, I allowed myself to be seduced by Sweet Georgia’s yarn club each winter-opening the small boxes (that sneek under UK custom’s radar.) is an absolute joy.. Marvellously, I can now buy some of your yarn in the UK!!
Thank you! I have also recommended your website as a design delight to many knitters here. I read some blogs-mostly of small independent dyers and designers- and occasionally join in- tune in to some twitter feeds when there is something I’m particularly interested in, rarely use FB, and don’t use instagram or pinterest-although my daughters are hassling me about the latter.
I wish you all the best for the next 10yrs

I’ll never stop reading blogs! They share way too much information that you really can’t get anywhere else.

Gosh – its changed a ton. Used to read blogs daily. Now I try to hit the highlights every week or so? Instagram definitely happens daily to check out various knitters and projects. But over the last 10 years I’ve gone from SAHM with contracting work on the side from home, to working full-time plus outside of the home as my children are leaving the nest. Funny how that changes your available leisure time!

I still love blogs :) Pictures are awesome, but I love to read different writing styles. I especially love reading the humorous aspects of knitting (which is why I love reading the Yarn Harlot, she’s made me snort a few times on the sky train in the morning! lol). I also feel that blogging is therapeutic, I love to write about my projects and share them with fellow knitters. :) Congrats Felicia on 10 years!! Keep writing and we’ll keep on reading!

Congratulations on the 10 years! I find that knitting blogs inspire me to be creative (I just have to step away from the computer more!) I think that the big changes in the past years is that there is a lot more hand dyed and hand spun yarns – which is wonderful.

Congrats on the blogaversary! Blogs are one of my main online activities. I have so many excellent ones to read through, but feedly helps speed that up. I’ve learned so much from various blogs (not to mention have been enabled so much through them as well). Here’s to another 10 years!

Although I love the photos on Instagram, I still follow several blogs. Sometimes a new (or new to me) technique or announcement of a new colourway that catches my eye, but I always enjoy reading them. I would have to say that reading, listening and watching knitting blogs and podcasts has opened me to so many new possibilities and helped my knitting skills continue to improve.

Congrats! Yes, definitely a win! I still read knitting blogs – the blogs, and the people behind them, have introduced me to new yarns (how I found SweetGeorgia), techniques and friends. I know they are work, and I appreciate them so much! Try never to miss. Now, bavk to knitting :-)

Congratulations Felicia! I enjoy reading my blogs. I have a handful of bloggers I follow now, knitting, sewing, spinning, and painting. I used to have many but had to cut down do to every day life happening around me. The bloggers I do follow offer so much and I appreciate everything they have to offer.
