The other day, I shared the wonderful list of sixteen designers who applied for our pilot Designer in Residence program and today, I am so incredibly thrilled to present to you our first two SGY Residents for the 2021 term!
Ruth Nguyen
“I can sense her loving character and sincerity pour out from the video.”ย – Charlotte Lee, referring to her thoughts on Ruth’s introductory video.
Ruth Nguyen joins us from the great south, down in South Carolina, USA. And, well, to be honest, she had us at “hello.” From her beautiful design portfolio, thoughtful and articulate application video, and sincere charm that literally exudes out of her every word, it’s easy to see how she won our attention. She shines in lacework and cables, while is also not shy to lean into her humor (anyone need a cowl for their chicken?). She’s already showing how strong of a designer she is, so I can’t wait to see how far she runs with the portfolio building opportunities and coaching from the program.

Matt Akers
“His energy is just awesome. I want to just squeeze him in a hug.” – Tabetha Hedrick in response to Matt’s introductory video.
Matt Akers brings a vibrant energy from his home in the tippy-top US state of Maine. Over his design career, Matt has developed a great eye for color and texture, letting it lead him into must-knit pieces from shawls to socks, but he has a great love for brioche that he’s ready to show the world. Matt’s eagerness is endearing on its own, but the strength of his application extends all the way into his pattern writing skills, portfolio, and video background. He’s got big plans for the year, so I am excited to see the way his work grows.

Please, hop on over to their channels and sites and give our two SGY Residents all the congratulatory love they deserve. They are going to do amazing things this year!
