August 2016 Sock Club // Sweet Embrace

Some months when I get home, I sit and stare at the club colour for a day or two. I’m usually waiting patiently for “it to tell me what it wants to be.” Other months, I get home and my girls lay their eyes on the yarn and immediately start saying, “Mommy, mommy, can we please have socks?” Which is exactly what happened with this month’s “Sweet Embrace.”

This month’s club is on the always delightful to knit Tough Love Sock and it was dyed by Mariana Frochetengarten. I loved reading Mariana’s colour story, and the differences she found when she moved to Canada from Brazil. Her unique colourway this month is certainly eye catching!

As I do every month, I swatch a lot before I start knitting. I like to play with stitch patterns to see what will really show off the yarn best. Funnily enough, this month, I didn’t like any of the stitch patterns I tried… not even enough to photograph them and share them with you! In the end, I decided to knit simple vanilla socks using the pattern in Kate Atherley’s Custom Socks book.

My girls have a fondness for short socks, which means I can easily get two pairs of socks from one skein of yarn and still have leftovers!

I found it so interesting to see how the yarn pooled in the two different sizes. There was only a 4 stitch difference between the circumference of the socks, but what a difference it made in the yarn.
