Autumn Dahlias: Clue One Cast On

Autumn Dahlias SweetGeorgia 2022 Mystery Knit-along

The abundant swath of dahlias sway against the skyline, seeming to wave their last farewells to the summer sun. At the height of their bloom, autumn seeps into the air like a whisper and the landscape takes on a richer hue. Dahlia’s soft petals, perfect and vibrant, beckon us into the seasonโ€ฆ and on to Clue One of SweetGeorgia Yarn’s 5th Annual Mystery Knit-Along (MKAL)!

Week One’s clue is going to walk you through the Gauge Swatch (if you haven’t already done it), the shawl setup, and three different stitch patterns. The best part is getting to jump right into using all the different colours!

Update on Aug 5, 2022: three small errors were found on Rows 2, 4, and 6 of the Mosaic Increase. Version 1.1 was sent out to everyone, but feel free to check out www.woocommerce-414791-4028440.cloudwaysapps.com/errata; we update it frequently.

I’m so excited the day is finally here! Is there a particular time the first clue will drop? I can’t wait to get started!

    1. If you purchased from SweetGeorgia, look for an email sometime before 9am PST. If you purchased from Ravelry, you’ve got an update now! :)

  2. LG says:

Is there a ravelry group for this? Where do we post questions, photos, etc.?

    1. Hello! No Ravelry group this year – you can post questions to us here on the blog and we encourage you to share pics on social media with the #sweetgeorgiayarns and/or #SweetGeorgiaMKAL hashtags. If you’d like to try out the School of SweetGeorgia to post on the forums (and access all the amazing classes), you can try 14 days for only $1 with the code: CRAFTWITHUS

Hi! Will the cast on party zoom be recorded? I will be away from the computer at the time…

    Patty

    1. Sadly, I don’t think I have the capability to record it on my equipment, but I’ll take a look. :)

  4. Amanda Cluxton says:

I got the email that says itโ€™s time to cast on (looks like the post here), but I canโ€™t download Clue 1. Itโ€™s still a placeholder in my downloads on this site. Any ideas?

    Amanda

    1. I think the email went out a little bit early, but the Clue should be going out to everyone here in just a few. Let me know if it’d not updated in the next hour.

  5. Amanda Cluxton says:

Thanks very much, Tabitha!! Now my next question, after I wind my sock blank into a ball, which end should I start with? I have the Celestial Fields kit. This looks so amazing!! โค๏ธ

    Amanda

    1. I would totally start with the light pink end

  6. Amanda Cluxton says:

Thanks again, Tabitha!! While my sock blank is drying, Iโ€™ll ask my other questions . Should I weight the sock blank to get it straight/not-kinky, or will it relax more as it dries? Never used one before . And in the pattern: under the Mosaic Section, does Row 16 use the MC like in Row 15 above? The color isnโ€™t listed in the written instructions. Using the MC would keep the 2-row pattern going

    Amanda

    1. Haha–No problem!
Weight is never a bad idea, but if you wrapped the yarn around a chair or something to skein it, I would just put it back on that.
AND! Not sure how I missed a row, but yes, you’ll use the same colour as the row before.

  7. Laura says:

Hi! I am just starting the first tweed increase and with k1 s1 wyif I just wanted to check that I am supposed to pass the yarn around the leg of the slipped stitch and not over the needle like I would with brioche. Thank you!

    1. Hey there, Yes, you are going to k1, and then bring your yarn to the front towards you from between the needles, slip the next stitch, then move the yarn back between the needles to knit your next stitch. Ruth has a really good demo of it in her tutorial, right at the 4:28 mark: https://www.schoolofsweetgeorgia.com/tutorial-knitting-technique-slipped-stitch/

  8. Amanda Cluxton says:

Hello again . Iโ€™m into the first Tweed Increase, and I just wanted to double check that the CC2 rows have the slipped stitches with the yarn in front? Iโ€™ve got pink dashes between my teal knit โ€˜vโ€™s.

Also, how do I share photos here?

    Thanks,
    Amanda

    1. Hi Amanda, Yep! Slipping with the bar in front creates a little tweed-like texture with the dashes. Looks like we can’t share pics here, but do share on social media, and be sure to tag us: @sweetgeorgia and #SweetGeorgiaMKAL

  9. Amanda Cluxton says:

Thanks very much! I just wanted to double check . Iโ€™ve got my ravelry page up and running with photos: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/acd101/autumn-dahlias-mkal

    1. Brigid Lora says:

Ooh, that is looking beautiful, Amanda!

Now, to still cast on myself. Iโ€™ve got some catching up to do!! :)

    2. Diane Ketchum says:

Looks wonderful, Amanda! I’m so glad you posted photos.

  10. Amanda Cluxton says:

Thanks very much, Brigid Lora!! Itโ€™s very interesting! Iโ€™ve never made a shawl like this, with โ€˜2 sidesโ€™ to it.

    Amanda

  11. Amanda Cluxton says:

I have another pattern question: on Row 2 of the Mosaic section, it says:
    V
    Row 1 (RS): With CC2, kl, kfb, k15, s2kp, k3,
    sl 2 wyib, k6, sl 2 wyib, [k10, sl 2 wyib, k6,
    sl2 wyib] twice, k4, kfb, k1. 79 sts.
    Row 2 (WS): With CC2, sl1 wyif, kfb, p5,
    [sl2 wyif, p6, sl 2 wyif, p10] twice, sl 2 wyif,
    p6, si 2 wyif, p1, kl, p2, k17, sl1 wyif. 80 sts.

The p1, k1, p2 in the last line isnโ€™t on the chart. Seems all the WS rows have this – to account for the spine stitch – in the written directions, but the carts are all purls thru the spine, then switch to knit

    Is the written correct?
    Amanda

    1. You are quite right. We’ve sent out an update with the corrections. Thanks for your patience. :)

  12. Amanda Cluxton says:

Actually, Row 2 looks like it should be โ€˜p3, k18, sl 1 wyifโ€™, to keep with the โ€˜2 sidesโ€™ on either side of the spine stitch.

    Amanda

  13. Amanda Cluxton says:

Also, the same problem seems to be on all the WS rows; they donโ€™t match the written pattern.

I did the written directions for WS rows 2 and 4, but row 6 written has us now knitting the spine stitch instead of purling it.

    Please help,
    Amanda

  14. Robin says:

Yes. I was following the mosaic written instructions but row 6 was not working out. However the chart seems to be correct as far as keeping the spine intact. According to the chart, the end of row 6 after the repeat portion should be p3, k17, sl 1 wyif

    1. Oh dear! You are quite right! I’m working on the fix right now, so look for an updated pattern shortly. Thanks so much for your patience!

  15. Nancy Wright says:

Hi, Tabetha – thanks for a great cast-on party on Tuesday. Are you able to provide us with an estimate of actual yarn usage of each colour or is that part of the mystery? Thanks!

    1. Let’s see… Based on my notes and the test knitters (who had slightly different gauge results), we used about: MC – 80-95g, CC1 – 75-93g, and CC2 – 84-105g

  16. Amanda Cluxton says:

Just to double check, the chart seems to have stayed the same, but the written part was changed. Is this correct?

If so, how do I go back and switch those stitches in rows 2 and 4 that I had knit (per the written instructions), but should have purled?

    Thanks,
    Amanda

    1. oh! Yes, the chart was correct; just the written had the errors. I saw your other post and glad you found a video!

  17. sherry.matthews says:

I missed the cast on party, too bad it wasn’t recorded. :>(

I am starting tonight so I hope to catch up this week.

    Sherry

    1. I’m so sorry you couldn’t make it! We’re planning a possible “wrap up” zoom party, so keep an eye out for that info soon.

  18. Amanda Cluxton says:

I finished the clue (Friday) without any other problems, and found a video on how to fix those few stitches I needed. ;D

I canโ€™t wait for the next Clue!!!
    Amanda

  19. Amanda Cluxton says:

Just a quick question for the chat here:

When the next clues come out, will we still be chatting here, or will there be another main post for each Clue where we can chat?

Trying to get organized (not always successfully) :p
    Amanda

    1. It’s probably easiest to comment on the new clue threads, but I’ll find you wherever you are. GRIN!
