Spinning, Taking Back Friday

Back to School Spinning

New handpainted fibre colourways by SweetGeorgia

I have back to school on my mind. This past week, my kids have gone back to school and I’ve been thinking a lot about how September is kind of the start of a new year. The start of brand new adventures, a new set of goals, plans, visions and aspirations. September is a really good starting place.

We recently started our Back to School special at the School of SweetGeorgia, an online fibre arts school we created back in 2017 and have been building the course content since then, adding close to 20 new courses every year. These courses spread over all of the different areas of fibre arts with knitting, dyeing, and weaving courses, and we’ve been adding a ton of spinning classes too. Right now, with the code: BACKTOSCHOOL2021, you can save 15% off our quarterly and annual All-Access memberships which get you into everything at the School: course, downloads, articles, forums… all of it is there!

With the new Spinning Study Group that also started at the beginning of September, and a new Nuances to Spinning Better Yarns course with Kim McKenna that just launched this week, on today’s Taking Back Friday vlog I want to talk about the spinning I’ve been doing lately, back to school and how learning is never done.

September is always a great time to talk about learning and continuous learning, at looking at how we can improve the current skills we have. If you are at all interested in learning how to spin, or how to improve your spinning, I really encourage you to come and join us at the School! Especially this month with the study group, we have new spinning courses, spin-togethers on Zoom, all sorts of things. I hope you join us!

I would love to hear from you… what are you currently interested in learning? What is capturing your attention and interest right now? What would you like to learn before the end of the year? Let me know in the comments!

IN THIS EPISODE

  • what I mention in today’s video: Here are links to items I talk about in today’s vlog…
    • There are a couple of new spinning courses which I mention in the video: Nuances to Spinning Better Yarns taught by Kim McKenna, which has content helpful for anyone, no matter where you are in the spinning process. There’s something there to help benefit everyone. The other class I talk about isย Spinning Intentional Colour taught by myself, which will be available in the next couple of weeks at the School!
    • I have been spinning yarns for the Nightshift shawl by Andrea Mowry, a bigger version of The Shift cowl, also designed by Andrea, which I showed a couple of weeks ago.
    • The new fibre colourways that I show in the video were all dyed on our Polwarth+Silk fibre โ€“ you can find all of the colourways here, some of which we’ve also made available on a Corriedale fibre base.
    • One of my goals is to develop a system for documenting my spinning work. I show worksheets which can be found at Kim’s new class, as well as Spinning Up a Level sample cards, which this course is taught by Katrina Stewart.
  • want to learn more about spinning and the fibre arts? Come visit all of the different levels of fibre arts classes available at the School of SweetGeorgia. Right now is an excellent time to join us at the School with our Back to School special (use the code BACKTOSCHOOL2021 for 15% off quarterly and annual memberships). More information at our SOS Membership page.ย I also hope you come and check out our Spinning Study Group which is running until November โ€“ it’s never too late to join in!
