We’ve passed the halfway mark of summer, making fall just a little more noticeable as it hovers around the corner. The hues of the warm season reached their peak, at least a couple of weeks ago, and now seem more muted, softer, gentler. Leaves are just starting to show signs of transformation, displaying a wonderful texture against that still-blue sky. This transition is my favorite time of year.
Green, at least here in Tennessee, is the dominate colour now as the flower petals fade and the early fall spinach and kale leaves grow bigger. It’s certainly not a sad time (far from it), though! Even as the hues soften, there’s a richness in the air that seduces the senses, making us feel a stronger pull to be outside. While the days are still hot, the evenings delve into a subtle coolness that urges exploration and wandering, looking for surprises in the trees, splashes of bright tones in new places, or enchanting textures in the change of seasons. Discovery and play intertwined.
I pulled out one of our new “colour splash” variegated yarns, Seedling, in Tough Love Sock to play with this week. The greens dance across a neutral field, much like the way leaves blow across a field that’s been mowed in anticipation of the fall crops. Invigorating, exciting, and utterly open to transformation, like the universe is inviting us to transition with it …
Keeping things simple was the name of the game, a delightful waffle stitch ribbing, allowing the bouncing colour to steal the show. The results are so playful! Grab some US Size 3 or 4 and give this a try:
Waffle Stitch (mult of 3 + 2 sts)
Row 1 (RS): K1, *k2, p1; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 2 (WS): K1, *k1, p2; rep from * to last st, k1.

Row 4: Knit.
Rep Rows 1 – 4 for pattern.
What is your favourite thing about this end-of-summer season? Are you ready for the shift into fall?
This is so beautiful! I bet it would look great in a simple wheaty lace pattern, too.
