Is summer exploding where you are? The trees are wild with birds zipping in and out of the dancing leaves, bright blue skies, and bold green as far as the eye can see … it’s also getting quite warm (alright, it’s getting hot!), so I’m reaching for one of our more lightweight yarns: Superwash DK.
Now, on a normal day, I wake early to have a bit of quiet time before getting the kids rolling for school, but on a summer day, I do something a little weird. I wake up just a smidge earlier (I know, the complete antithesis of summer break. Don’t hate. Grin.) so that I can work a bit before they crawl out of bed. If you do that, though, you’ll discover something magical: the air is comfortable and soft on the skin. Ie: an ideal knitting time!
My spot on the back porch gives me the perfect view of the puppies playing, as well as the neighbor’s honeysuckle and mimosa blossoms in full bloom. I’m not sure what it is, but those moments are wildly inspiring. The mind naturally drifts to new ideas, projects, designs, or lines for an upcoming blog post. Is it the sound of the cardinals and finches fluttering about, the rhythmic clicking of my knitting needles, or the tumbling puppies in damp grass that spurs the imagination?
The Tangerine colourway that I’m knitting keeps me on that spot, right at that time of morning. The bold hue, so much like the honeysuckle, stirs the senses, almost to the point where I can literally smell their sweet fragrance of floral honey in the air. It’s addicting and energizing, almost exotic. Paired with a luxuriously light yarn means that you are, quite possibly, holding the very essence of summer in your hands.
Using size 5 needles, I let lace carry me away to that warm morning hour of lush growth, burgeoning ideas, and passionate intentions.
