I love that the pattern has enough shaping and other techniques (like the short rows for the collar) to keep things interesting, but the stitch pattern is easily memorized and very meditative. Also, because the sweater is knit in pieces, the sweater is easy to work on when you’re on the go. I knit most of the sample on a road trip!

Triona Murphy’s Glenwood, knit in Superwash Worsted, is a long, cozy cardigan with plenty of yummy texture. It’s worked from the bottom up in pieces and seamed for structure, the sweater is comfortable yet stylish and works equally well for running errands, going out with friends, or snuggling in front of a roaring fire. Just imagine this in all the stunning colour trends for the season!

Triona’s tip for knitting Glenwood

The sweater is the perfect introduction to short row techniques. Because the collar and front bands are knit in garter stitch, there’s no need to pick up the wraps after you work the short rows. They’ll just disappear right in to the fabric.

Also, set-in sleeves can be a little intimidating for the novice seamer, so check out the fantastic tutorial from Amy Herzog: Seaming the Dreaded Sleeve Cap.

Behind the Brilliance: Triona’s Five Faves

Favourite way to spend Saturday morning: A trip to my favourite indie coffeeshop to have some delicious coffee and a muffin with my husband and one-year-old son. (There used to be knitting involved in this trip, but my son makes it a little tough these days. But when he’s older, I’m totally bringing it with me again!)

Favourite knitting tool or fiber: It’s hard to choose, but I think I’d have to say my ChiaoGoo Red Lace Twist interchangeable needle set. These needles are the most perfect ones I’ve ever used: smooth, but just a little grippy, with perfect pointy tips. Give me a good smooth worsted weight wool yarn and these needles, and I’m in heaven.

Favourite guilty pleasure: Hmmm… probably ‘90s sci-fi TV shows. I love Stargate SG-1, The X-Files, Dark Angel, Lois and Clark, Sliders, Star Trek: TNG, Red Dwarf, and a bunch of others. Now I have most of them on DVD and get to watch them while I knit.

Favourite colour: Bright jewel tones are my favourites, especially greens and blues. I have to force myself to branch out every once in a while—otherwise I’d never knit anything in any other colour!

Favourite thing to wear in the fall: I love a good fitted cardigan with a scoop or v-neck, preferably with some nice texture or cables.
