It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce some general price increases to our yarns and fibres.
While we may feel like this knitting and fibre arts community exists in one big neighbourhood, the unfortunate truth is that our yarns at SweetGeorgia are made and manufactured in Canada where we sell our products in Canadian dollars (online and to our Canadian retailers) and yet we pay for nearly all our supplies and materials in US dollars, no matter where our vendors are from. Over the past year, we have seen an enormous rise in the difference between the values of the USD and CAD. At the same time, our vendors have increased their prices to us due to increases in the costs of wool (at a four-year high in early 2015). We have done our best to try to absorb the difference on behalf of our customers, but now that our costs have increased significantly we are forced to make changes to our pricing.
Starting in October, we will make updates to the pricing on our online shop to reflect the new prices in Canadian dollars. In an effort to continue to be a truly Canadian company to Canadian customers, we decided not to switch all our pricing to US dollars as we have noticed some businesses have been doing. Soon, we will be introducing our new website which will allow you to choose the currency in which you would like to view and pay for your order. So Canadians can continue to shop and pay in Canadian dollars and US customers can shop and pay in USD. We hope this will make things smoother and easier for everyone.
In light of our recent 10th anniversary celebration, we are extending an offer of 10% off yarns and fibres in the online shop with the code “TENFORTEN” which will be valid until October 10, 2015!
Recently, I’ve noticed the frustrating (and scary) trend to charge in USD throughout the knitting community. Standing by my own decision to remain a designer, charging CAD, watching so many others across the country rapidly switching to USD makes me question myself often. While I understand the cost of business is rising it is darn prohibitive to those of us Canadians on a budget who truly want to support Canadian dyers and designers. It makes me very sad that I can’t design with yarn from indie dyers in my own city/province/country because the exchange is so ridiculously high.
I’m so proud of Sweet Georgia for standing true to their home and fellow Canadians. One more big reason to keep loving these gorgeous colours and yarns. Thank you!
Amen to that! I too find it disturbing that so many Canadian dyers and designers are charging fellow Canadians, purchasing in Canada, in US dollars. I did a quick survey on Ravelry, and could find no designers in any
other country, worldwide, who chose to charge in a currency other than
their own, except Canadian designers! It bothered me so much that i contacted several about it, but their rationale left me either unconvinced, or offended when they said the Canadian market was too small for them to worry about. I try to ‘vote’ with my poor Canadian dollars by avoiding purchases from these vendors. So, thank you Felicia for keeping Canadian pricing for your Canadian customers!

Felicia, thank you for being so honest on this topic.
I am in the same boat . I cannot absorb the costs anymore without a price rise either. I love being Canadian + want to give love back to my Canuck customers, which is why I’m committed to charging in CAD funds too. It’s definitely a challenge though.
See you at Knit City!

Felicia, thank you for charging Canadian customers in Canadian dollars. Even if Canada provides a small market per centre, I feel irritated if a Canadian business wants to charge me for my purchase in USD. Last time I looked we were a sovereign state with our own currency. If I were to pay for a purchase with VISA I would also have to abide by their currency exchange rate which also adds more money to the purchase. So, I have made the decision not to support any Canadian business that charges Canadian customers in USD. It is the least I can do.

Thank you for keeping your prices in Canadian Dollars. Canadians are sophisticated enough to understand your need to increase prices due to increased costs of raw materials sourced in the US. But start charging me in foreign currency in my own country and I’ll go elsewhere to shop.

I received an email stating you had variegated Christmas yarn, green, red, do you have this product?
Hi Chris! Must have been someone else’s email? We don’t have a red/green Christmas colourway :(
