January 2017 // Fast Forward Sock Club

Last time I knitted socks was half a year ago. It was my first pair, which took me seven months to reach bind off. After this experience, I thought I would not do my second pair any time soon. However things changed faster than planned. When I saw Januaryโ€™s sock club colourway: Fast Forward, immediately I thought it could be a good pair of socks.

Broken Seed Stitch Socks by Hanna Levaniemi was sitting in my queue for quite a while, and so it didnโ€™t took me too long on deciding patterns for January project. It was until later, when I actually looked into the instruction, I realized I got myself a not so tiny, tricky problem.

For people who had done socks many times, and knew their sizes well, Broken Seed Stitch Socks would be a piece of cake. But for me, spoiled by other step-by-step instructions, I was put into a challenge by choosing this pattern as my second pair of socks.

I cast on 60 stitches for cuff; because thatโ€™s the number I bind off for my first pair. Then I happily worked the ribbing and leg portions, found it fast and easy, until I reached the point where heel started. I had absolute no idea how to knit heel or gusset without instructions, and so I used Feliciaโ€™s Evo Socks to be my guide. It worked pretty well, only that I needed to recalculate stitch numbers and rows.

When I finally completed all the math and knitting, I found this half-knit sock was too wide for my narrow feet. But I decided to go on anyway because I didnโ€™t want to do any more math that day! Plus, I re-knit the toe twice before I found the best decreases to fit my foot properly.

The other sock was done following my own notes, which slight adjustments were made for easier reading.

I paired the Januaryโ€™s sock club with Glitterati in colourway Birch.

All the maths, including stitch numbers, row numbers, and decreases, are available on my project page on Ravelry. I also knitted a hat with broken seed stitch because there was a lot of left over yarn. Hat pattern is available on the same project page.

We would love to see what you are knitting with the January Club yarn! Please share over on the Ravelry group or Instagram, and tag your projects with #sgyclub and #sweetgeorgiayarns.

Until next month โ€“ Happy knitting!
