July 2016 Fibre Club // Odyssey

There are so many things to say about this month’s club colourway but first, I wanted to wish Ray safe travels home and best of luck in his new teaching job! It has been such a pleasure to spin the colourways he has created for the club and I feel quite blessed that we were able to experience his colour sense and explore with him.

I chose to divide this month’s braid into two equal piles vertically. One I striped 7 times and spun end-to-end, eventually Navajo (or chain) plying. I liked the variegation of this yarn and the tight twist angle, which will help with durability when I (eventually) knit this yarn into socks. The second half of the braid, I decided to do something different with to experiment with since the colours this month are some of my favourites. I love brown and turquoise together, particularly next to one another. In the end, I decided to spin a three-ply fractal. I further divided the fibre into three stripes. The first one, I spun end-to-end. The second, I split 3 times. The final third one, I tried to split 6 times but was only able to split it 5 times. It had become too fine!

All of the yarn I spun this month was on my Bosworth Mini and Houndesign Lace (no longer available) spindles. I wanted lots of twist and these spindles areย fast! Then, I plied on my Snyder Spindles Steampunk spindle, which is great for plying.

About Rachel Smith

I'm a knitter and handspinner living just outside of Vancouver, BC, with my husband, two kids under 4 and two Golden Retrievers. I've been knitting and sewing for many years. Spinning came into my life a couple of years ago when a friend showed me how to get my spinning wheel working smoothly! Besides crafting, you can usually find me outside, camping, walking, or taking photos.
