Join us in participating in Kay Hopkins (Knit for the Soul) Wildfire Knit-Along and Fundraiser, raising funds to help those in need from the absolutely devastating 2020 wildfires along the West Coast, said to be the worst fire season in at least 70 years.
The Wildfire KAL fundraiser features Kay’s two new designs:ย Forest Mosaic Shawl and the Forest Mosaic Cowl. Both are currently available for preorder, with portions of the proceeds being donated to a selection of wildfire charities. The full patterns will be released on November 5.
When purchasing the patterns, you can direct your contribution towards the charity of your choice, with codes listed on both pattern pages on Ravelry (links above), as well as at the Knit for the Soul webshop.
The Wildfire KAL will run from November 6 to December 10, but there is absolutely no pressure on finishing within this timeline. It is meant to be a relaxed knit-together โ join in when you can and finish when you can. There will also be prizes awarded for photos shared using the #wildfirekal and #knitforthesoul tags.

Both Forest Mosaic designs are reminiscent of old-time Nordic shawls. The textured colourwork is knit using the mosaic knitting technique, which we have a tutorial for on the School of SweetGeorgia! In the Mosaic Knitting Tutorial, Felicia uses Kay’s Smuggler’s Cove design to demonstrate how to work the mosaic stitch.
If you’re interested in knitting either (or both!) of these designs and looking for colour pairings, we’ve also put together some suggestions here. Whether they’re tweaked to work perfectly for you, or the exact colours are used, we hope they’re helpful in coming up with ideas for knitting your own Forest Mosaic design.
Forest Mosaic Shawl
A triangle shawl with a center spine, worked top-down.
- Estimated Yarn Required
MC: 650 yds / 592 m.
CC: 300 yds / 273 m.
Tough Love Sock: two skeins for the MC, plus one skein for the CC.
Forest Mosaic Cowl
A triangle cowl with a center spine, worked top-down. Back edges can be seamed, or you can optionally add loops and buttons for additional versatility in wearing.
- Estimate Yarn Required:
MC: 223 yds / 204 m.
CC: 150 yds / 137 m.
Tough Love Sock: one skein each for the MC and CC.
These pairings would work great for both the shawl and cowl!
We look forward to seeing your Forest Mosaic projects online, and thank you to Kay for organising this wonderful fundraiser knit-along.
