The best and most fun of knitting with SweetGeorgia’s yarns is to be adventurous with colours.
I am a generally safe knitter (or colourist). That means I choose colours I know well, and KNOW for sure will look good with each other. It is very rare I would put two different variegated yarns in the same project. It would be too much for my eyes, and make the piece too busy looking. But this time I left my comfort zone.
With the May’s sock club colourway: Unicorn Frap, I decided to knit a Five by Five Cowl designed by Felicia. It is a simple yet exciting project. The pattern only required me to knit and purl, but I was given the opportunities to flush out the craziest colours ideas in me.

Five by Five uses three colours: two sock-weight variegated colourways and one mohair laceweight. The trick I used to test colour combinations is easy — hold three colours all at once and twist them together. If I like how they twisted together with the colour repeat, I go for it.
For this particular project, I ended up matching the Unicorn Frap with January’s club: “Fast Forward” and Vintage Patons Australia Fashion Mohair which I inherited from my grandma (this yarn is probably older than I am). The twist check went well; and I was satisfied with the knitted result just after doing a few rows!

The only thing I did differently from the pattern was that I added buttons. Instead of starting with provisional cast on, I used long-tail cast on. Then I followed the pattern until there was 62 inches, cast off here, and switched to crochet for creating buttonholes. The buttons were bought from Fabricana in Richmond; just sewed them in place, matching the four buttonholes I made. The finished cowl can be wrapped loosely around my neck twice!
