Today, we’re going to talk about krokbragd weaving – a Scandinavian weaving technique you may have heard me mention before. We’ve recently launched a class at the School of SweetGeorgia, Weaving Krokbragd, taught by Debby Greenlaw, author of two krokbragd weaving and pattern books. I’ve made a new project, which I’m really super proud of, and I want to talk about my process, how I got started and how you can learn to do this too!
I first started becoming interested in this particular technique when I saw it on Instagram and on Pinterest. It’s so amenable to using different colours and amazing colour combinations. It’s very graphic and there are a lot of ways you can use this technique. But it took me a bit of time to wrap my head around what it is and how it works, and so in today’s Taking Back Friday video, I want to share with you a little bit about my whole journey with it. There are so many things you can do with this technique and I don’t want you to be intimidated. I want to show you how I started from the easiest possible thing until I got to the point where I was making a larger rug project, feeling really comfortable with it.
In krokbragd weaving, there is a lot of exploration and play. If you are at all interested in learning how to weave krokbragd, I want to encourage you and help you feel like it is totally doable. Even though it may look like it’s a little bit intimidating, it’s actually very simple – the structure is very simple. I encourage you to check out Debby’s class as she leads you through the whole thing, guiding you through the steps of making a small wall-hanging sampler.

My krokbragd weaving then moved up to an older Ashford table loom, then finally to my Schacht Baby Wolf loom.
- The yarns used in my coaster and mini-rug projects are Harrisville Highland yarn. On my table loom sample, I used SweetGeorgia BFL+Silk DK yarns and they worked really well for this weaving technique. Warp yarn used is a 12/4 linen, rug warp yarn.
