Today, we’re going to talk about krokbragd weaving โ a Scandinavian weaving technique you may have heard me mention before. We’ve recently launched a class at the School of SweetGeorgia, Weaving Krokbragd, taught by Debby Greenlaw, author of two krokbragd weaving and pattern books. I’ve made a new project, which I’m really super proud of, and I want to talk about my process, how I got started and how you can learn to do this too!
I first started becoming interested in this particular technique when I saw it on Instagram and on Pinterest. It’s so amenable to using different colours and amazing colour combinations. It’s very graphic and there are a lot of ways you can use this technique. But it took me a bit of time to wrap my head around what it is and how it works, and so in today’s Taking Back Friday video, I want to share with you a little bit about my whole journey with it. There are so many things you can do with this technique and I don’t want you to be intimidated. I want to show you how I started from the easiest possible thing until I got to the point where I was making a larger rug project, feeling really comfortable with it.
In krokbragd weaving, there is a lot of exploration and play. If you are at all interested in learning how to weave krokbragd, I want to encourage you and help you feel like it is totally doable. Even though it may look like it’s a little bit intimidating, it’s actually very simple – the structure is very simple. I encourage you to check out Debby’s class as she leads you through the whole thing, guiding you through the steps of making a small wall-hanging sampler.
Let me know if you’ve ever had any interest in doing this kind of weaving, or if it has captured your attention. I recommend going on Instagram to look at #krokbragd or #krokbragdweaving and you will see the most beautiful, graphic and colourful designs. It’s a really exciting technique, and if you’ve ever been curious about it, I encourage you to give it a try!
IN THIS EPISODE
- what I mention in today’s video: In today’s vlog, I am talking about krokbragd weaving โ a Norwegian weaving technique. Krokbragd means crooked path, and it looks very complicated but in fact it actually is quite simple. It is a 3-shaft point twill. Below are links to items mentioned in today’s vlog…
- I suggest taking a look a Angie Parker Textiles on Instagram @angieparkertextiles. Angie makes beautiful things using this weaving technique.
- The frame loom I used to first try out krokbragd was made by Woven Wood Goods. They are no longer available for sale, but you can follow Anna’s beautiful wood working projects at @woven.wood. My krokbragd weaving then moved up to an older Ashford table loom, then finally to my Schacht Baby Wolf loom.
- The yarns used in my coaster and mini-rug projects are Harrisville Highland yarn. On my table loom sample, I used SweetGeorgia BFL+Silk DK yarns and they worked really well for this weaving technique. Warp yarn used is a 12/4 linen, rug warp yarn.
