At SweetGeorgia, we are very blessed to have some incredibly talented dyers and artisans on our team. And for nearly two years, we have been joined by Mariana Frochtengarten, a teacher and textile artist with over 20 years of experience in dyeing. In her personal dye practice, Mariana specializes in resist dyeing methods like itajime shibori and batik.
Now, starting on April 6, 2017, Mariana will be leading a 6-week shibori course at Trout Lake Community Centre! In this course, students will learn how to dye and create patterns and textures on natural fiber fabrics using shibori resist dyeing methods and reactive dyes. The techniques explored will include arashi, itajime, and ne-maki shibori. In these methods, several ways of folding, pleating, wrapping, tying, and clamping the fabrics allow us to create beautiful surfaces. Students will be encouraged to combine the different resist methods they learn and experiment with the idea of layering through consecutive resist and dye steps. On completion, students will have a clear understanding of the processes and the knowledge to work independently on further explorations. Course supply fee is $20 and will be provided by the instructor. Students will bring their own fabric.
