May Sock Club // Daydream

One of my favourite parts of club is the story that Felicia writes about the colourway. This month she talks about a birthday milestone that she has coming up… it so happens that I too, have the same birthday milestone coming up. So I can completely relate to the feelings of pressure that many of us feel at this time in our lives. I love the idea of thinking of this time as an opportunity to design the second half of our lives and it’s what I’m currently focused on. Here is it, the aptly named Daydream. Isn’t it lovely?

The minute I got this month’s colour home, both my girls immediately requested socks. They love hand knit socks and refer to them as their “slippery socks.”

The base this month was Panda sock, a blend of 60% SW merino, 30% bamboo and 10% nylon. It’s so soft and the bamboo provides a lovely sheen to the yarn.

My first step when knitting socks is to swatch.

And a tip that I picked up from Kate Atherley’s Custom Socks book was when you’re swatching for knitting in the round, you can knit on double point needles, slide the work back to the starting end and pull your yarn across the back. It means the back of your swatch is messy but it more accurately represents what you’ll be doing when working in the round.

I’d thought this yarn would look amazing as knee high socks, but the girls both wanted ankle socks… so ankle socks they got!

I love the way the colour pools at the toes and heel. (I did toe up socks and the pattern I used was in the Custom Socks book, modified slightly to fit smaller feet!)

I’m pleased to say that I still have 50 grams of yarn left, so now I just have to decide what to knit for me! Maybe I’ll make myself a pair of matching socks!!
