When I met Miriam Felton back in 2009, she was already becoming established as a contemporary knitwear designer. Her focus was lace and gorgeous lace shawls at the time and she even designed this luxurious looking Nefertiti Wrap with our CashSilk Lace all those years ago. Today, Miriam designs knitwear of all sorts โ socks, sweaters, accessories โ you name it. But this new collection is perhaps Miriam’s first foray into colourwork knitting.
The Modern Colorwork Collection by Miriam Felton is a set of six new colourwork designs that have been inspired by modern quilt designs (like little hexagons or Flying Geese) as well as new takes on traditional colourwork motifs (Norwegian star motif PLUS the Tumbling Blocks quilt design). Miriam is releasing one pattern a day on her blog and all the patterns are available in eBook format on Ravelry now.
Today’s release is the Willis Triangles Cardigan that Miriam knit up in our SweetGeorgia Superwash DK. Here’s how she describes it:
The multi-sized triangle motif of this pattern was inspired by both the traditional quilt pattern of Flying Geese and the abstract expressionist paintings of Thornton Willis, for whom this sweater is named. The triangular fold-back lapels echo the colorwork, and the facings of hem and sleeve both sport their own colorwork designs. All facings are worked attached to the main sweater body, then joined (or in the case of the neck facings, stitched) together toward the inside.
- Yarn: DK weight yarn, 1040{1180, 1310, 1450, 1590, 1730, 1800} yds of MC, 80{90, 100, 110, 125, 135, 145} yds of CC1, 40{45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 75} yards each of CC2, CC3, & CC4. Shown in SweetGeorgia Superwash DK (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 256 yds/115g) in Birch (MC), Tumbled Stone (CC1), Cayenne (CC2), Raspberry (CC3), Ginger (CC4)
- Needles: 32-inch circular in 3.5mm (US4) and 3.75mm (US5) or size needed to obtain gauge; DPNs, magic loop, or other preferred method for small circumferences in both sizes for the sleeves.
- Gauge: 22 sts & 32 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) square in stockinette on larger needles after blocking.
- Finished Sizes: XS{S, M, L, 1X, 2X, 3X} corresponding to finished bust of 30{34.5, 38, 42.5, 46, 50.5, 54} inches (75.5{86.25, 95.5, 106.25, 115.5, 126.25, 135.5}cm). Sample shown in 38โ size on 37โ bust. See schematic for specific measurements.
- Notions: crochet hook & waste yarn for provisional cast on, 7 buttons (3/8โ), tapestry needle
- Pattern Includes: colorwork chart, written instructions
- Stitches Used: knit, purl, k2tog, stitches slipped wyib & wyif, ssk, m1L, m1R, placing and slipping markers, wrap & turn short rows in garter stitch, kf&b, yarnover.
The body of this sweater is knit flat in one piece from hem to armholes. The fronts and back are then divided and worked separately using raglan shaping. The fronts are continued beyond the shoulders in colorwork, reversing the neck edge shaping to create the fold-back colorwork collar facing. The sleeves are knit in the round to the armhole, then worked flat and seamed into the body to give additionally stability to support the substantial fold-back collar. A back collar piece is picked up and knitted on, and then narrow front button bands are picked up and knitted on. The inside collar facings are sewn down to the inside of the sweater.
Modern Colorwork Giveaway!
Miriam has been generous enough to offer up a copy of the Modern Colorwork Collection eBook to one of our lovely readers. And we’re chipping in with three skeins of Tough Love Sock to knit up the small version of the Chromaticity Cowl. It takes just one colour each to make her very contemporary looking little hexagon cowl, and we picked a couple colours that would match up nicely for a warm, sweet colour combination.
Hereโs the rules and how to enter:
- Leave me a comment here, telling me which pattern in the “Modern Colorwork Collection” you most want to knit and why!
- Be sure to include your email address or Ravelry ID or some way for me to contact you.
- One entry per person, open to international entries too.
- Giveaway ends one week from today โ 11:59pm on Thursday, August 15th.
I’ll randomly draw a winner next week! Until then, happy knitting!
Wow! I love the Chromacity Cowl. I can imagine endless possibilities with this pattern. It will quickly become one of my go-to patterns. I like what you have done here with one row that stands out on its own but I also love the rainbow effect on Ravelry. It is modern and eye catching but depending on the colours used, a version could be made to please just about everyone. I love colourwork best of all, especially with beautiful yarns!

I love the DeStijl Wrap. I think it would actually make a beautiful gift for a new mother for a nursing blanket! However, I’m also a cowl junkie, so very much looking forward to the Chromaticity Cowl on a more personal basis :) Ravelry id: madgiddy
What fabulous patterns! Would love to knit the Congdon Cardigan with the Chromaticity Cowl a close second. My email is quinnsi@hotmail.com

I wish I was an advanced enough knitter to do the Congdon Cardigan – I love that it is a modest grey with a bold pop of intense colourwork. But the Chromaticity Cowl seems more doable for my experience level and is fabulous too.

I’ve told Myriam this via Ravelry, too, but it bears repeating here. She has really outdone herself with this collection! The Chromacity Cowl is chic and bang on trend, especially with the colourways she picked AND the one you show here. The Willis Triangles sweater is so unlike anything else I’ve seen, and yet so stylish and so tailored-looking… Bravo!

Wow! I love the Chromacity Cowl!! I also love the DeStijl wrap; how the colours overlap looks awesome!! All the patterns I’d eventually make but those two are at the top of my list. On ravelry she shows it in rainbow as well as the one colour highlighted in your blog post which looks awesome! I love how it looks highlighting the one colour!! A persone could even do different tones of colour too, like a darker purple on the bottom and work up to a light purple. Endless possibilities. Thank you for the chance to win your awesome giveaway!!

I really love the DeStijl Wrap. There are a lot of colour-work shawls around right now, but there is something so fresh about this design. Although I am intrigued by the Metamerism pullover … in part because I’m looking for something worsted weight so that I can indulge in a whole of your new Trinity yarn!!

The Chromaticity cowl, because rainbows… (I am totally an 80’s child…) but the Congdon Cardigan is also pretty interesting. Lower on the list because of large swathes of stockinette, though.

I must knit myself the DeStijl Wrap from your Modern Colorwork Collection! Wraps are always perfect to throw on/throw off and as an art teacher, potter, domestic goddess and “fresh” Aussie wool spinner at the moment {today it’s chilly here in Oz as we’re in the midst of winter just now}, the DeStijl Wrap will be my gorgeous, modern addition to wear with ease. I plan to use my own handspun yarns for this one too:0) You can find me at Ravelry: BrightsideKnitter

It’s got to be the Chromacity Cowl! Colour’s always been healing for me, and the cowl with all its brights is just perfect for that. I love how Miriam’s taken Fair Isle techniques and turned them on their head – these designs are indeed modern (far from traditional) but they won’t make any of the old Scots from the actual Fair Isle turn in their graves!

Willis Triangle Cardigan.
I love the lapels and the structure of the sweater.
It is so reminiscent (to me) of cardigans and jackets from the 20’s and 30’s.
The soft shape of the lapel and the design of the color work. Very geometrical, Art Deco which
is one of my favorite design era’s. The combination of design of the color work and the soft lapel and
the elongated and fitted body, its right out of the 20’s. I love Downton Abbey and it would be something
that Lady Mary Crawley would have worn in the later seasons. I especially like the color work facings!
A subtle surprise, when you least expect it! It goes without saying that Sweet Georgia yarn is the finest
to knit with and the colors are so saturated and rich, I love wearing all my Sweet Georgia knits. A winning combination,
beautiful sweater design and yarn what could be better? The only thing to add to this would be a British television show,
a fire and a cuppa tea, I won’t mind if its raining then!

I’m just now trying my hand at colorwork via an online class. I’m having fun, but my colorwork is fairly uneven. I’m hoping that with some practice I’ll be able to make something as beautiful as these designs. I really like the Metamerism Pullover, though I’d use different colors instead of just one color. I also like the Chromacity Cowl. Love all the different colors. Thanks much for the giveaway. Savannagal on Rav.

Mim’s designing in lace is is pure couture. The designs in her new ebook gives us lace designs in a colorful way. My favorite is “Metamerism”. The design includes some great fashioning at the hip line and bust line, although it showed the hip increase and decreases in the photography. The little dip in the neckline would make this a perfect topper for that dinner out. This form of colorwork, Fair Isle, is a particular favorite to knit. The large motif makes a very charming design. Her designs in lace have always been a favorite of mine.
“Modern Colorwork Collection” will change the scene for lace knitting is a marvelous way!
Thanks for a chance to knit these patterns to Felicia and Mim.

Obviously I’ve been under a rock, I’d totally missed these patterns before now! The Chromacity Cowl is gorgeous, but what has really caught my eye is the bold stripe detail of the DeStijl Wrap! I will have to break out the pencil crayons and figure out a colour combination for that one. Love this giveaway, I just started getting into colourwork last fall, (despite decades of knitting under my belt I always avoided patterns that involved Fair Isle or Intarsia). Ravelry ID: Gaile

The DeStijl Wrap looks like it’s going to be my perfect transition piece from fall to winter. I can already visualize myself with it wrapped around my shoulders as I jump on the train downtown, brightening up the stormy day and my fellow commuters with the bold colors. As a new knitter fair isle projects with multiple colors look beautiful but intimidating. So I’m hoping that with a bit of practice knitting the wrap it will boost my confidence to try new multicolored pieces.

I like the Chromacity cowl. I’ve just signed up for a Fair Isle class on Crafty and this looks like a very doable project for just learning. I like both the size of the project (time wise) and the ease of customizing different color schemes. I quilt, too, and have been looking at hexagon patterns for an upcoming quilt project – maybe a tote to coordinate with the cowl?

I love love love the Congdon Cardigan; for one thing, I’m always on the lookout for cardigans because I live in a warm climate with a lot of airconditioned buildings, but aside from its practicality, I think that cardigan has lovely, classic lines with such an interesting pop! I think it would be stunning in a monochromatic palette…

For me the DeStijl shawl is the most striking of the collection – the colour block design is so strikingly modern and yet so reminiscent of the best architectural design of Scandinavia on the one hand and Navajo blankets on the other. i mostly make my own patterns these days but that one I would want the pattern for sure.

Absolutely wonderful patterns – both the cowl and the cardigan.

I would start with the chromaticity cowl to get enough practice before moving to the cardigans!

I’m wow’ed by the Starfish Pattern–goes with the story line about the girl who tossed one starfish back in the ocean”…makes a difference to that one…” this stole “will make a difference” to a beautiful lady celebrating her 92nd Birthday this fall! Thank you!

I can see myself making the DeStilj Wrap first, then moving on to the Chromacity Cowl and the Suprematism Mitts.

The chromacity cowl is on my radar. I haven’t done much colour work so this is easy enough that I can follow along and gear up to do more colour work patterns. Also, I’m going to follow Miriam’s colour scheme and do the grey with a pop of yellow that looks awesome.

Beautiful, I would enjoy learning the pattern, to watch it grow and become something so lovely to wear. beautiful…

I love the color possibilities of the Chromacity Cowl. I can see coordinating with many things in my closet. I took a class with Miriam and love her designs.

Colour work is relatively new to me, but I love it. I’d begin with the Chromacity Cowl, as fall is in the air here and this would be the perfect accessory. I think I’d try Willis Triangles Cardigan shortly after though as I love the way the colour peeks out at you. It would certainly add a bright spot to a winters’ day!

The Congdon cardigan is my favorite…I love the graphic patterning up the front. It looks like it would be fun to play with the color combinations on! Great work Miriam! Rav ID: Shutterhoney

I love the chromaticity cowl! Every winter I knit up a cowl or two to keep me warm during the cold Alberta winter. This one is striking! and sure to draw alot of attention from my co workers. They are always interested in the newest item i have knit up.

I am torn between the Congdon Cardigan and the Willis Triangles but would likely go with the first because of its vertical (i.e. slimming) detail.

Don’t know if I have the knitting know-how but I’d love to try and tackle the Congdon Cardigan. It’s beautiful!

I love every single pattern in this book … but if I had to pick only one, it would be the Congdon Cardigan. I love the colors up the front. It’s so fun! I haven’t done much colorwork, but I finally feel like I’ve found a group of patterns that would be a great way to practice!

I think the DeStijl Wrap is my favourite. I love blocks of colour and wraps are one of my favourite clothing pieces for fall (and my chilly office)!

This Chromacity Cowl is my favorite – simple, yet you are able to switch up the colours however you’d like, in a way that will make each cowl completely different. Options are great.
Pink, white, and grey SweetGeorgia and the ebook for this collection? What more could a girl ask for?

I love the Chromaticity Cowl. It looks like a great way to add a pop of colour to a winter outfit! I like how the hexagon borders tie everything together.

They’re all beautiful. I might dare to try the Chromaticity Cowl, and maybe when I become a better knitter, the Willis Cardigan.

I’m slowly falling in love with colourwork, there’s so many ways to make any FO completely unique with different colour combos. I would love to make the chromaticity cowl first, I would probably make it with Deep Cove as the MC, and the two CCs would be Slate and Ultraviolet. I really prefer the 3 colour choice over the rainbow effect.

I think the cowl is absolutely perfect for someone like me. I love color work in moderation. That is, I love color work in small projects. And I can never decide on colors because I love so many. So just think, you could make hundreds of the cowl and use hundreds of different sweet Georgia yarns! (I do have just a few in my stash!)

I noticed these patterns popping up on Ravelry the other day, LOVE THEM ALL! The Chromaticity Cowl was the first pattern that caught my eye because i’m a sucker for cowls and colorwork. But what I would really really like to make (once I become a more established sweater knitter) is the Congdon Cardigan – Love it!

Hard decision – love the chromaticity cowl (and the colors in the giveaway are my favorites!) or the WIllis Triangles cardi because they just stand out so neatly.

Hi Felicia, I would definitely go for the Metamerism pullover. I envision a pale background for the main part of the sweater, orange or a light purple, with the circular pattern being knit in a complimentary color in a deeper shade. I think a low cut sweater would be perfect for Vancouver. I always get overheated in my sweaters even on rainy winter days!

I would love to knit the Chromacity Cowl. I see it being a Christmas gift in a variety of colours for the young women on my gift list. Each would have their own distinctive colour selection depending on what I see as their colour preferences. kiheigirl on ravelry
