Knitting

Modern Colorwork & Giveaway

When I met Miriam Felton back in 2009, she was already becoming established as a contemporary knitwear designer. Her focus was lace and gorgeous lace shawls at the time and she even designed this luxurious looking Nefertiti Wrap with our CashSilk Lace all those years ago. Today, Miriam designs knitwear of all sorts โ€” socks, sweaters, accessories โ€” you name it. But this new collection is perhaps Miriam’s first foray into colourwork knitting.

The Modern Colorwork Collection by Miriam Felton is a set of six new colourwork designs that have been inspired by modern quilt designs (like little hexagons or Flying Geese) as well as new takes on traditional colourwork motifs (Norwegian star motif PLUS the Tumbling Blocks quilt design). Miriam is releasing one pattern a day on her blog and all the patterns are available in eBook format on Ravelry now.

Today’s release is the Willis Triangles Cardigan that Miriam knit up in our SweetGeorgia Superwash DK. Here’s how she describes it:

The multi-sized triangle motif of this pattern was inspired by both the traditional quilt pattern of Flying Geese and the abstract expressionist paintings of Thornton Willis, for whom this sweater is named. The triangular fold-back lapels echo the colorwork, and the facings of hem and sleeve both sport their own colorwork designs. All facings are worked attached to the main sweater body, then joined (or in the case of the neck facings, stitched) together toward the inside.

  • Yarn: DK weight yarn, 1040{1180, 1310, 1450, 1590, 1730, 1800} yds of MC, 80{90, 100, 110, 125, 135, 145} yds of CC1, 40{45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 75} yards each of CC2, CC3, & CC4. Shown in SweetGeorgia Superwash DK (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 256 yds/115g) in Birch (MC), Tumbled Stone (CC1), Cayenne (CC2), Raspberry (CC3), Ginger (CC4)
  • Needles: 32-inch circular in 3.5mm (US4) and 3.75mm (US5) or size needed to obtain gauge; DPNs, magic loop, or other preferred method for small circumferences in both sizes for the sleeves.
  • Gauge: 22 sts & 32 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) square in stockinette on larger needles after blocking.
  • Finished Sizes: XS{S, M, L, 1X, 2X, 3X} corresponding to finished bust of 30{34.5, 38, 42.5, 46, 50.5, 54} inches (75.5{86.25, 95.5, 106.25, 115.5, 126.25, 135.5}cm). Sample shown in 38โ€ size on 37โ€ bust. See schematic for specific measurements.
  • Notions: crochet hook & waste yarn for provisional cast on, 7 buttons (3/8โ€), tapestry needle
  • Pattern Includes: colorwork chart, written instructions
  • Stitches Used: knit, purl, k2tog, stitches slipped wyib & wyif, ssk, m1L, m1R, placing and slipping markers, wrap & turn short rows in garter stitch, kf&b, yarnover.

The body of this sweater is knit flat in one piece from hem to armholes. The fronts and back are then divided and worked separately using raglan shaping. The fronts are continued beyond the shoulders in colorwork, reversing the neck edge shaping to create the fold-back colorwork collar facing. The sleeves are knit in the round to the armhole, then worked flat and seamed into the body to give additionally stability to support the substantial fold-back collar. A back collar piece is picked up and knitted on, and then narrow front button bands are picked up and knitted on. The inside collar facings are sewn down to the inside of the sweater.

Modern Colorwork Giveaway!

Miriam has been generous enough to offer up a copy of the Modern Colorwork Collection eBook to one of our lovely readers. And we’re chipping in with three skeins of Tough Love Sock to knit up the small version of the Chromaticity Cowl. It takes just one colour each to make her very contemporary looking little hexagon cowl, and we picked a couple colours that would match up nicely for a warm, sweet colour combination.

Hereโ€™s the rules and how to enter:

  • Leave me a comment here, telling me which pattern in the “Modern Colorwork Collection” you most want to knit and why!
  • Be sure to include your email address or Ravelry ID or some way for me to contact you.
  • One entry per person, open to international entries too.
  • Giveaway ends one week from today โ€” 11:59pm on Thursday, August 15th.

I’ll randomly draw a winner next week! Until then, happy knitting!

Wow! I love the Chromacity Cowl. I can imagine endless possibilities with this pattern. It will quickly become one of my go-to patterns. I like what you have done here with one row that stands out on its own but I also love the rainbow effect on Ravelry. It is modern and eye catching but depending on the colours used, a version could be made to please just about everyone. I love colourwork best of all, especially with beautiful yarns!

I wish I was an advanced enough knitter to do the Congdon Cardigan – I love that it is a modest grey with a bold pop of intense colourwork. But the Chromaticity Cowl seems more doable for my experience level and is fabulous too.

The Chromacity Cowl is chic and bang on trend, especially with the colourways she picked AND the one you show here. The Willis Triangles sweater is so unlike anything else I’ve seen, and yet so stylish and so tailored-looking… Bravo!

    Willis Triangle Cardigan.
I love the lapels and the structure of the sweater.
It is so reminiscent (to me) of cardigans and jackets from the 20’s and 30’s.
The soft shape of the lapel and the design of the color work. Very geometrical, Art Deco which
is one of my favorite design era’s. The combination of design of the color work and the soft lapel and
the elongated and fitted body, its right out of the 20’s. I love Downton Abbey and it would be something
that Lady Mary Crawley would have worn in the later seasons. I especially like the color work facings!
A subtle surprise, when you least expect it! It goes without saying that Sweet Georgia yarn is the finest
to knit with and the colors are so saturated and rich, I love wearing all my Sweet Georgia knits. A winning combination,
beautiful sweater design and yarn what could be better? The only thing to add to this would be a British television show,
a fire and a cuppa tea, I won’t mind if its raining then!

Mim’s designing in lace is is pure couture. The designs in her new ebook gives us lace designs in a colorful way. My favorite is “Metamerism”. The design includes some great fashioning at the hip line and bust line, although it showed the hip increase and decreases in the photography. The little dip in the neckline would make this a perfect topper for that dinner out. This form of colorwork, Fair Isle, is a particular favorite to knit. The large motif makes a very charming design. Her designs in lace have always been a favorite of mine.

“Modern Colorwork Collection” will change the scene for lace knitting is a marvelous way!
Thanks for a chance to knit these patterns to Felicia and Mim.

The DeStijl Wrap looks like it’s going to be my perfect transition piece from fall to winter. I can already visualize myself with it wrapped around my shoulders as I jump on the train downtown, brightening up the stormy day and my fellow commuters with the bold colors. So I’m hoping that with a bit of practice knitting the wrap it will boost my confidence to try new multicolored pieces.

This Chromacity Cowl is my favorite – simple, yet you are able to switch up the colours however you’d like, in a way that will make each cowl completely different. Options are great.
Pink, white, and grey SweetGeorgia and the ebook for this collection? What more could a girl ask for?

I’m slowly falling in love with colourwork, there’s so many ways to make any FO completely unique with different colour combos. I would love to make the chromaticity cowl first, I would probably make it with Deep Cove as the MC, and the two CCs would be Slate and Ultraviolet. I really prefer the 3 colour choice over the rainbow effect.

I think the cowl is absolutely perfect for someone like me. I love color work in moderation. That is, I love color work in small projects. And I can never decide on colors because I love so many. So just think, you could make hundreds of the cowl and use hundreds of different sweet Georgia yarns! (I do have just a few in my stash!)

I noticed these patterns popping up on Ravelry the other day, LOVE THEM ALL! The Chromaticity Cowl was the first pattern that caught my eye because i’m a sucker for cowls and colorwork. But what I would really really like to make (once I become a more established sweater knitter) is the Congdon Cardigan – Love it!

Hi Felicia, I would definitely go for the Metamerism pullover. I envision a pale background for the main part of the sweater, orange or a light purple, with the circular pattern being knit in a complimentary color in a deeper shade. I think a low cut sweater would be perfect for Vancouver. I always get overheated in my sweaters even on rainy winter days!
