So, we had starting talking a couple of weeks ago about sectional warping, and today it’s very exciting… I am no longer behind the loom. I’m now working in front of the loom, getting all of the ends threaded through the reed of the Mira loom, getting ready to weave. And so on today’s Taking Back Friday episode, I wanted to very quickly share with you a few of the next steps when it comes to sectional warping.
A couple of weeks ago I set up a sectional beam to wind yarn onto the loom in a different way than I have normally done so (using a warping board, back to front technique and such), but this is different. I was finding a lot of videos out there with people cranking the back beam and making these sections, but I didn’t really see how you would get the yarn from the sectional beam to the heddles, for threading the heddles. So, I wanted to just share with you a few of the little steps I took in order to get that to happen.
The weaving of this baby blanket project will all be a part of a class at the School of SweetGeorgia which will be on twill gamps and weaving twill on a 4-shaft looms. A twill gamp demonstrates all of the different variations and patterns you can get by doing different kinds of threading or treadling. The baby blanket project is an extrapolation of the twill gamp by taking one of the patterns in there, and expressing it in a larger cloth. If you’re wanting to follow along the progress and see what else is coming soon to the School of SweetGeorgia, it can all be found at the SOS Roadmap.
I would love to hear from you if you’re interested in learning more about weaving on 4-shaft looms, weaving twills or weaving another kind of weave structure! I’m always trying to figure out what I’m going to weave next, and it’s really easy to get distracted and do down these different rabbit holes of all the things you can learn about weaving. I’m interested to hear how you’re going about learning weaving, and what is capturing your own weaving interest right now as well. Let me know in the comments!
IN THIS EPISODE
- what I’m wearing in today’s video: I’m wearing the Navelli tee designed by Caitlin Hunter. Mine is knit from two skeins of test-dyed Tough Love Sock (closest colour is Deep Cove), plus one skein each of Fauna and Auburn. We also have a couple of Navelli yarn sets still availableย here. The knit tee I’m wearing in the weaving photo above isย Laia, designed by Isabell Kraemer, knit using our Flaxen Silk Fine yarn in Beach House.
- what I mention in today’s video: Here are links to sone of the items mentioned in today’s vlog…
- In the video, I’m using a Leclerc Sectional Warp Beam with 1″ sections (and a Leclerc Tension Box not shown) โ you can find more info about them here. I also mention my Schacht Tension Box which has a function where you can create a shed. For the sectional warping process, other items I have used are: the Leclerc Electric Bobbin Winder,ย Leclerc Bobbin Rack with yarn guides and plastic bobbins from Leclerc. All of these items are not currently listed on our site, but we are happy to help with any order info needed. Reach out to us at: info@sweetgeorgiayarns.com.
- The yarn I’m using for the handwoven baby blanket project is Gist Beam Organic 3/2 Cotton yarn.

Hi! I love that youโre working with a 4-shaft counterbalance loom because thatโs exactly what I have. But my loom is an old handmade one with only 4 treadles. Any advice about how to add treadles to have a wider variety of tie-ups? As a beginning weaver I would really welcome lessons about a wide array of weaving patterns on 4 shafts. Iโm also interested in weaving rugs on my loom. Itโs a floor model 60โ across. Thanks for all your vlogs!
Cheers,
Janet
