November 2016 // False Creek

As I have progressed in my spinning, there are certain fibres that I come back to again and again. Wensleydale is one of those fibres. I love the long staple length and halo of the finished yarn. It has a lovely lustre and warmth that draws me back again and again. As well, I absolutely love singles yarns – and Wensleydale has to be one of the best for singles!

November 2016 // False Creek

This month, I striped the fibre lengthwise 3 times to create 4 stripes. I spun each end-to-end, holding my hands about 10 inches apart and drafting forward twice per rotation of the drive wheel. I spin on a double treadle wheel, so every time my feet depressed, I was drafting forward. I spun on a ratio of 9:1, which meant that roughly 4 twists entered each length of drafted fibre (9 divided by 2 = 4.5). This created a very low twist, light and lofty yarn. I was completely smitten and wanted to cast something on with it immediately!

Camp Out Fingerless Mitts

I decided to knit the Campside Fingerless Mitts pattern, a free pattern on Ravelry, as a Christmas gift for my sister-in-law. They were quick to knit up and I have enough to finish another pair for myself!

Have you delved into Novemberโ€™sย club yet? How are you spinning it? Please share over on the Ravelry group or Instagram, and tag your projects with #sgyclub and #sweetgeorgiayarns.

Until next month โ€“ Happy spinning!

About Rachel Smith

I'm a knitter and handspinner living just outside of Vancouver, BC, with my husband, two kids under 4 and two Golden Retrievers. I've been knitting and sewing for many years. Spinning came into my life a couple of years ago when a friend showed me how to get my spinning wheel working smoothly! Besides crafting, you can usually find me outside, camping, walking, or taking photos.
