Welcome to the 6th stop of the “Palette” Blog Tour! Colourful, tonal, stippled or speckled, multi-coloured and variegated yarns are often fun to admire in the skein, but more challenging to match with a knitting pattern. We get asked all the time for advice on what to knit with our hand-dyed yarns… and Louise Zass-Bangham of Inspiration Knits has just launched two patterns that provide a great option for your beautiful hand-painted skeins!

Painted

Painted is a lovely shallow triangle scarf that uses a vintage stitch pattern to jumble up and show off the variety of colours in hand-painted and hand-dyed yarns. It’s an easy-to-intermediate knit, using 400 to 440 yards of fingering weight yarn and can be easily adapted to use up the full amount of yarn you have on hand. Here it is in a more semi-solid or tonal hand-dyed yarn, such as our SweetGeorgia BFL Sock in Coral Rose:

And also here in more speckled and colourful hand-dyed yarns from Miss Babs and Rhichard Devrieze:

Fresco

Fresco is a deeper, triangle shawl knit in approximately 500 to 550 yards of either DK or worsted weight yarn for a cosier finish. Like Painted, Fresco uses the same vintage stitch pattern but on a larger scale that really opens up and shows off the variations of colour in whatever hand-dyed or hand-painted yarn you choose. Fresco is also an easy-to-intermediate knit. The vintage stitch pattern used in both designs is called the Grecian Plait Stitch from 1943 and the Mary Thomas Book of Knitting Patterns. Using a highly variegated yarn lends a modern spin, and Louise offers tips in the patterns for overcoming problems with pooling, which can happen with variegated yarns.

The price for each pattern is £3.50. The e-book Palette containing both designs is £4.50.

The Painted & Fresco Knitalong

Want to knit either one of Painted or Fresco? Louise is hosting a knitalong in her Ravelry group starting April 1st (today!) for both the Painted and Fresco scarf designs. Hop on over to join the KAL »

I can never decide if I like striping yarns or variegated better of handpainted. I love stripes! Colorwork without the ends to weave in!! But a shawl or hat out of variegated yarns are really also so lovely!

Tonals are probably my favorite but semi-solids and stripes are great too! It really depends on the project and the look you’re going for.

Wow, I love the stitches in those patterns! As for hand-painted and hand-dyed yarns, it’s hard to pick just one favourite, right? Recently I’ve been reading about planned pooling, yet another knitting rabbit hole…anyway, back to topic, for me it all depends on the project but tonal or semi-solid would be my go to for most things. Cheers!

my favorite hand dyed yarn to buy is something with lots of pretty colors, but to actually knit with, I love semi-solids and the depth and dimension they give to garments

  15. Dari Trout says:

I am drawn to hand dyed yarn like a moth to flame! It is a bit embarrassing sometimes. I love how tonal dyes can give a subtle variance in a project. And the myriad possibilities of multi-color yarns is just mind boggling! I often spend a considerable time choosing just the right pattern for a skein, to bring out all of its best qualities. These patterns are perfect!

I like every possible type of handpainted yarn, and am always captivated by multicolor yarns. Right now, i’m most attracted to semi-solid colors, with a wide range of color from the lightest to darkest shade. i think it would show off this pattern beautifully!

Honestly, I’ll take any type of hand dyed yarn, although my favourite is stippled. I love the effect it gives!

I generally pick really varigated skeins, then am never sure of how to use them best. I am trying to pick tonals now, they work for so many shawls, which is what I knit.
