Colourway // Invisble Fate
For these past few months of the Club, we have been featuring many of the talented and passionate dyers at SweetGeorgia. This month, our gorgeous colourway was created by Charlotte Lee, a graduate of the Emily Carr University of Art & Design in Animation. Here is her colour story:
INVISIBLE FATE // Sometimes there are turning points in life that seem small at the moment, but turn out to be huge in the future. Not for a second would I ever have imagined going so deep into the art and beauty of crafts.
Working with yarn would seem to be an odd choice for me, a sporty girl who was into track and field, hiking, and biking. No one believed that I would join a crochet club. In fact, most people around me joked that it was “a retirement hobby”. At the time, I was just about to graduate from grade 9 and move to Canada to begin another chapter of life. I crocheted on and off throughout my high school years.
Craft was never my focus, though, because I was still finding the balance between sport and art. But then at the beginning of grade 12, I suddenly decided to start a crochet club myself. The love for craft grew more and more each year, to the point that I considered changing my major at least twice. I ended up graduating from art school in Animation, but my heart longed to do what I truly enjoyed.
SweetGeorgia Yarns was a big surprise that came into my life unexpectedly. Looking back, I see that crafts have marked all the important milestones in my life. It was as if there was an invisible hand guiding me to my destined fate. How could I ever have known that my life would unfold in this way, which began simply with a two-month crochet club ten years ago?

Spun from a blend of 60% superwash merino wool, 20% yak, and 20% silk, this yarn combines the best qualities of each fibre to produce a luxurious indulgence of a yarn. This 3-ply yarn is a soft, natural grey fingering weight yarn with approximately 400 yards per skein. The natural grey colour produces a rich, warm depth of colour when hand-dyed.

This fibre is pure indulgence! Yak+Silk is a blend of 50% Tibetan yak and 50% cultivated silk and it’s the ultimate luxury spinning fibre.
Yak fibre can be sorted into three types: the outercoat which is shiny and very coarse, the midcoat with a micron count of 25-52, and the down which is 1.25 to 2.25 inches long in staple length with a micron count of less than 25, down to 13. The yak used in this particular blend ranges from 17 to 19 microns (cashmere is typically 19 microns or less), making it very downy soft. Being a down fibre, yak is very warm too. Mixed with silk, this blend will make a shiny, strong, soft, and supple yarn and fabric!
