Spinning

Sign up for Spinzilla!

Are you ready to spin?! Want to spin on Team SweetGeorgia?? Sign-ups begin Thursday, August 15th at the Spinzilla website.

We teased you about it a couple months ago. But what is Spinzilla? Spinzilla is a community-wide event where competing teams challenge each other to see who can spin the most yarn during Spinning & Weaving Week (October 7 to 13, 2013).

Already over 30 retailers and wholesalers have formed teams that you can join. All the yardage you spin during that week will be measured and counted towards the team total. The maximum numbers of spinners on any team is 25, so sign up as soon as you can!

Originally, I had thought I could set up two teams at the same time โ€” one for locals and one for the world-at-large โ€” but it turns out, we can set up one team at a time. So if we fill up one team to 25, we can start a second one!

There is a $10 sign-up fee per spinner. Where does the fee go? One of the main purposes of Spinzilla is to fund the establishment a Spinning Program for the Needle Arts Mentoring Program (NAMP). NAMP provides instructions and supplies to mentors who work with youth groups, teaching young people about fiber arts. With the donations from Spinzilla, NAMP will be able to purchase spindle kits and fiber and create a curricula for Spinning.ย The entire sign-up amount, after credit card processing fees, is being donated to NAMP. This is a great opportunity to spread the love of hand spinning and create help create a new generation of hand spinners. For more information about NAMP, visit their website.

We’ll have fibre prizes for winners amongst our own team and we’ll be looking to host some spinning nights too. I’ve also been working on a special project for our Spinzilla team members that I’m planning to launch soon… I hope you’ll join us!
