Living in a temperate rainforest, the sight of lush ferns and mossy greenery is everywhere. Local Vancouver designer, Alexa Ludeman (one-half of the awesome Tin Can Knits), designed this slouchy and soft Sword Fern Hat in our SweetGeorgia Merino Silk Fine.

This hat was inspired by the beautiful Sword Ferns that carpet the forest floors in BC. I love the way their sweeping fronds dip low to the ground and the geometric way they branch out. Coupled with a small leaf motif this hat speaks of home. โ€” Alexa Ludeman

Alexa has created this hat with an interesting construction. This hat is constructed by first knitting the leaf lace, then picking up stitches for the ribbed brim, then picking up stitches for the crown. So it’s like three parts… a little bit of a challenge, but a beautiful result.

It takes a a little over half a skein of fingering weight yarn, but you’ll get the slouchiest and loveliest results if you use a yarn with silk and drape in it. Anything else (regular sock yarn) might cause you to get a stiffer hat that will have a very different effect.

As with all the designs that Tin Can Knits creates, this pattern is sized from Baby through Toddler to Adult (small, medium, and large)! The pattern is available now on Ravelry for just $5 and if you purchase before August 31, 2013 you’ll get 10% off your pattern! No coupon code needed!
